Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Derek has played for many groups across the United States, including; the New Philharmonia Orchestra, Brockton Symphony Orchestra, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, Harvard Orchestra, MIT Orchestra, Reading Symphony Orchestra, New England Philharmonic, New England Conservatory, Tufts University Orchestra, and the Northeastern University Orchestra, just to name a few. In 2009, Derek also had the privelege to perform with members of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.
Derek has been on the substitute lists with the Boston Ballet Orchestra, Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra, and as of 2009 has been placed on the substitute list with the Dallas Opera Orchestra and Dallas Wind Symphony. Derek has been a finalist for the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra (IN.) in 2008, also serving as their interim bass trombonist. In 2007, Derek was bass trombonist for the Brockton Symphony Orchestra (MA.)
As a teacher, Derek has been a low brass instructor for the Mesquite and Grand Prairie Independent School Districts, along with being appointed as low brass instructor at The Music Shoppe, in Champaign, IL. Derek has had the privelge to perform in masterclasses for such notable artists like; Thomas Leyendecker (Utility/Bass Trombone, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Jon Witaker (University of Alabama), Donald Babcock (Eastern Michigan University).
Derek attended summer music festivals such as; the Eastern Music Festival and School in 2003 as a student of Greg Cox (Second Trombone, Vancouver Symphony), in 2005, he attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival as a student of James Box (Principal Trombone, Montreal Symphony), and in 2006, attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute as a student of Don Lucas (Boston University).
He attended the New England Conservatory of Music, as a student of Douglas Yeo (Bass Trombone, Boston Symphony Orchestra).
